A2 for the multi-year residence card, B1 for the resident card, B2 for naturalisation: the French level required in 2026, and its link to the civic exam.
The French level required depends on the permit you are aiming for. And note: the language level and the civic exam are two separate conditions.
What level for your situation?
- Multi-year residence card: level A2;
- Resident card (10 years): level B1;
- Naturalisation: level B2 (raised since 2025).
And the civic exam?
In addition to the language level, you must pass the civic exam (a 40-question quiz in French) for a first multi-year residence card, a resident card or naturalisation. It is a separate requirement in its own right.
How to prove your level?
Your level can be proven with a diploma, a professional certification or a French certification (DELF, TCF, DCL).
An important point
